Trauma and EMDR

Trauma

When a stressful or traumatic event occurs, it seems to get locked in the nervous system with the original picture, sounds, smells, thoughts and feelings.  This information can become distorted and affect our feelings about these events.  Research shows that the brain also gets impacted when trauma occurs in our lives.  These events continue to cause distress through flashbacks, anxiety, panic attacks or less evident manifestations.  I help diminish the impact of these events with interventions that give relief to flooding of negative feelings, so that old triggers become inactive.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a scientifically validated psychotherapy model to relieve the after effects of trauma.  The eye movements (or other forms of bilateral stimulation) used in EMDR appear to unlock the nervous system and allows the brain to re-integrate positive information.  The procedure includes reprocessing of negative, distorted self-thoughts associated with the trauma, to positive self-beliefs.

It is a proven technique for working with:

  • All types of anxiety and panic attacks
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Self-limiting beliefs
  • Hard to break maladaptive habits or patterns of behavior
  • Low self-esteem
  • Feelings of loneliness and worthlessness
